What Happened to Jimmy Carter’s White House Solar Panels?

2 May

Did you ever wonder what happened to the solar panels that Jimmy Carter put on the White House roof in 1979?  When Ronald Reagan was elected in 1980 he unceremoniously tore them down.

So where are they now?

After being kept in storage (maybe in the White House basement?) for about a decade, they were donated to Unity College in Maine and installed on the cafeteria roof.  They’re still there today:

Numerous articles report that the Carter panels stayed up until roof repairs were undertaken in 1986 So, it’s not like Reagan had the ripped out as soon as he got there. In fact it seems that Reagan had them up a lot longer than Carter did.

And they were used to heat water in the staff mess. Not like it was running the whole White House.

    Nice Posting.

I agree that we need to move in to Solar Power and other green energy. Having the whitehouse as an example surely helps.

True. Thanks for pointing this out.

Check out this article about Obama considering putting more panels on the White House:

This is not the whole story. Newer solar panels were installed in 2002 and 2003, including both water heating and photovoltaic versions.
