Solar Umbrellas

20 Aug

Cool article in MIT Tech Review on thin sheets of printed solar cells used to coat umbrellas that can then provide power for cell phones, laptops, etc.

Read the article here.

Yet another example of how alt energy is making small but intriguing inroads into daily life.

The more I think about it, the more I realize that to really get renewable energy, you have to think both globally and locally. The big energy companies and government centers are leading the way. But there’s just as much if not more renewable energy innovation happening in small start ups and small towns.

I think it is wonderful that the majority of the populace in this country is waking up to the reality of new energy sources. Given that because of recent gas prices, people finnally see the need for alternative energy sources. It’s also nice to see large corporations pushing through greener vehicles and other products. Is it in time to save our climate? I don’t know. Is there anyway to reverse the damage done. Don’t know that one either. When it hits our pocket books and our standard of living, that’s when progress is made. The scientist and engineers who will benefit first are those who had the vision years ago that change was coming. Interesting article on the umbrellas. Maybe soon it will be all over the place. Thanks.
